The Downswing
Ladies have a common problem of lack
of power. One of the reasons for this is what I call casting.
- Casting is the negative way to initiate a downswing.
This is a releasing or (unhinging) of the wrists prematurely in
the backswing (see photo right)
- See the illustration at the bottom
of this page
- This early release of the clubhead has the
effect of lost power, fat and thin golf shots.
- Notice from the 3 pictures below how
the wrist position is maintained in the first stages of the downswing.
(see photo below left)
- Through impact the wrists release (see photo
below centre) as the arms continue to extend through towards the
targets. (see photo below right)
- To initiate a correct downswing we must ‘Pull
The Chain’. This is the term I use to describe the left
arm initiating the downswing on a vertical path whilst we keep
our back to the target. (see illustration below)

Gentlemen tend to swing over the top!
- This is a term I use to describe the aggressive
use of the shoulders to initiate a downswing. It has the effect
of Photo delivering the club to the ball on too steep a path and
also a path that travels across the ball. (out to in swing path,
see faults & fixes)
- This movement causes topped, skied, pulled
and sliced golf shots, non-of which sound too desirable.
- To initiate a correct downswing we must ‘Pull
The Chain’ (see illustration below).
- At the top of the backswing, keep your back
to the target and pull the left arm on a vertical path. Maintaining
both the width and wrist hinge until half way down. It is at this
point where you can now attack a golf ball with the transferring
and turning of the whole body onto the left side.
