This term refers to a point mid way
between the feet, to a point opposite the inside of the left heel, along
the target line.
It is between these 2 points that the ball is positioned
prior to making a full swing, depending on which club is being used.
Poor ball positioning causes many problems such as:
Ball position also effects the Angle
of Attack which determines how much spin is placed on a ball.
In a golf swing the circle made by the clubhead
is called the swing arc. This arc has its lowest point where it should
meet the ground ½ inch forward of the centre of your stance. A
ball struck from centre of stance therefore receives a downward blow which
imparts backspin. Moving the ball progressively forward reduces backspin
by shallowing the angle of attack.
| The Rule of Thumb! |
SW PN, 9, 8 Iron struck from centre of stance.
7 Iron ½ inch forward
6 Iron ½ inch further forward
5 Iron ½ inch further forward
4 Iron ½ inch further forward
1,2 and 3 Iron and all wood ½ inch further forward.
This is a point roughly opposite the inside of left heel. |
If you think of your thumb as you seven iron which is
½ inch forward of the centre of you stance, then each digit is
another club and another half inch forward of centre, you little finger
been you 1,2,3 iron & woods.
Notes:
- Do not under estimate ball position
- This article describes ball position for a
standard full swing
- Ball position may vary to change the requirements
of a shot, E.g. higher flight, lower flight, pitch shots, chip shots
and awkward lies.
- Do not under estimate ball position.
