Symptoms

  • clubhead strikes too high on the back of the ball / hits near the top of the ball and the ball scuttles along the ground.

Diagnosis
Many faults are in the setup

  • Is the grip too tight
  • Is the ball too far forward or too far back in the stance
  • Are the eyes focussed on the top of the ball
  • Are the hands too low on the grip
  • Are the knees over-flexed / too bent
  • Are you too close, or too far away from the ball.

Many faults are in the swing

  • Has the head lifted in the backswing
  • Has the body swayed too far sideways right
  • Has the weight been held forward and not transferred to the right in the backswing at all
  • Has the spinal angle raised during the backswing (See illustration)
  • Has the spinal tilt over the ball been elevated (spinal angle increased) too soon in the downswing, so the head and shoulders lift up before the ball is struck
  • Are the arms bent (or shoulders hunched up) at impact
  • Are you afraid, or do not understand the importance of taking divots.

Other faults are in the equipment

  • Are the clubs too short
