Check setup

  • Bottom edge of the clubface at 90º to the target line
  • Neutral grip showing 2-2½ knuckles of the left hand with the right hand fitting snugly over it as normal over the left thumb (see illustration right)
  • Ball position appropriate to club selection
    • middle of stance for shortest clubs
    • opposite left heel for longest clubs
  • Body weight distributed evenly on the balls of the feet
  • Centre of the ball lined up with toe (outer) end of clubface grooves
  • Grip pressure firm but softer and more comfortable

Check swing

  • Ensure the clubface is in a neutral position as it is taken away in the backswing (See illustration)
  • Think about keeping the weight on the balls of the feet throughout the entire swing
    • Consciously avoid rocking onto the toes or heels
  • Aim to reproduce the address arm and hand position at impact keeping the arms in towards the body
  • Consciously bring the arms into the downswing
    • Let the arms fall initially
    • Keep the back to the target
    • Strike with the hands
  • Allow your head to raise and turn following the clubhead along its arc after impact
    • Watch the clubhead strike the ball then watch the clubhead swing through and the ball fly
