The Shank

Symptoms

 

  • ball curves away quickly and dramatically right with no resemblance to a real golf shot


Diagnosis
Many faults are in the setup

  • Is the clubface open
  • Is either hand in a weak position on the grip (too far over to the left)
  • Is the ball positioned too far back in the stance
  • Is the (majority of the) weight being placed on the heels
  • Is the ball being addressed in the hosel (angled section of the club joining face to shaft)
  • Is the grip pressure too tight

Many faults are in the swing

  • Is the strike being made from well inside (around the body) (See illustration)
  • Or well outside (over the top) the correct swing line
  • Is the distance between body and ball being reduced in the downswing by a forward rock onto the toes
  • Is the distance between club and ball being reduced in the downswing by the arms being thrown out away from the body
  • Are the shoulders too dominant in the downswing
  • Is the head staying down too long (beyond impact)
