The Major Hook (the Pull-hook)

Symptoms

The ball sets off left of target then curls away dramatically further left

Diagnosis
A number of faults are in the setup

  • Is the grip too strong (hands too far over to the right of the grip) (see photo right)
  • Is the ball too far forward in the stance for the club being used
  • Is the body open/aligned too far to the left of the target
  • Is the stance too narrow (feet too close together)

Other faults are in the swing

  • Is the backswing being initiated with a hinge of the wrists which:
    • Avoids any shoulder movement at takeaway and so discourages a proper shoulder turn in the backswing (see photo left)
  • Is the downswing being initiated with the right hand and shoulder so (see photo right):
    • The swing becomes right hand and shoulder dominant
    • The right side takes over too early in the downswing causing the body to rotate too soon
    • The clubface closes (points left) and strikes from the outside (out to in)
