- The practice ground can be your best
ally in the fight to achieve better golf out there on the golf
course.
- This is where all the set up and swing thoughts
you have can be groomed to make them second nature on the course.
- I like my pupils to break a golf shot
down into two sections:
You may have 6 or 7 things to
get right at set up, however once they are in place FORGET THEM.
A good Professional will then give you no more than 2 swing thoughts
to follow. After all, our golf swings are over in roughly a second.
How many of us are capable of more than 2 thoughts in that space
of time.
Once a reliable swing is achieved the practice
ground can be used to find out each clubs purpose and distance.
- Select a 7-iron
- Pick a target line
- Hit between 50-80 balls
- Assess only the straighter shots and consistent
strikes
- You should then find the mid range ball and
use this as that distance for that particular club.
- Each golf club should travel between 8-12
yards different in length from the next therefore: If a 7-iron
distance is 150 yards
An 8-iron will be 138-142 yards
and a 6-iron will be 158-162 yards.
- Points to take into consideration when playing
could be:
1. Inconsistent weather conditions will effect
distance: Rain
Wind, Temperature. For example:
2. Sloping lies will effect distances:
Striking a ball off a down slope will make a golf ball travel
further.
Striking a ball off an up slope will make a golf ball travel shorter.
- Most golf courses I have played have
either a yardage chart or markers on course
indicating certain distances to the green. Knowing your clubs
distances gives you the chance to use these to your advantage.
