| Focus On Putting
- Youngsters are not generally blessed with an abundance of feel.
Yes you like to whack the ball as far as you can but that’s
not what putting is all about:
- Feel therefore needs to be developed. Hours of putting, aiming
for different distances.
- This is the most personal part of the game. We see hundreds
of different styles and it is impossible to pick out any one,
which is the best.
- Individuals do however stand out both locally, right to the
top of the pro ranks. People like Phil Mickleson and Ben Crenshaw
whom are wonderful putters.
- Good putters have similar qualities:
- Feel
- Self Belief
- Imagination
- Sound Basics
- Hours of quality practice behind them.
General basic qualities necessary for good putting are (see bottom
3 left pictures)
- Light and comfortable grip pressure
- Arms hanging freely from the shoulders
- Ball in the centre of the stance
- Position the eyes directly over the starting line of the putt
(see photo bottom right)
- Feel the movement with the shoulders, keeping the wrists firm
and the head still.
- I like to work with a 50/50 action. However far back the putter
goes then it should go the same distance through. Change the speed
for change of distance.
