| Knowing where to finish
a golf swing is critical; this lesson takes you through a natural
progression to what I like to call ‘the pose’.
This is a very definite and important finishing position which
encourages the natural release of the club and good balance both
of which are necessary for consistent, powerful shots.
Each time a new lesson is undertaken you must remember that there
is a little more to think about during a very short space of time.
With this in mind note that it will not be easy, therefore patience
is a virtue. Golf is a confidence game therefore never be too afraid
to take a little step back to the previous lessons to re-install
any lost confidence.
Read through – Aim, Grip,
Posture, Stance
and Body Alignment
in the Fundamentals section.
SET UP
- Find a target about 80 yards away
- Place the ball on a tee
- Select 7 or 8 iron
- Aim the club head behind the ball and adapt correct posture only
now position the outside of you feet shoulder width apart and position
the ball in the centre of the feet.
You should now incorporate correct stance and body alignment as
follows:
- Right foot is square to the target line with the left toe turned
at about 30 degrees.
- The hands are positioned opposite the inside of the left thigh
with a 4-5 inch gap form the top of the club to the body.
- Chin if held high clear from your chest.
- Left arm is extended – notice how the shaft seems like an
extension of the left arm.
- Right arm is flexed with the elbow pointing at the right hip.
- The line through the feet knees hips and especially shoulders
are parallel to the target line.
NOTES
- Driving Ranges offers square mats, lines on mats, parallel lines
everywhere, which makes this alignment far easier to visualise.
- Yes there is a lot to remember but golf is about repetition and
you will surprise yourself how much you can take in over 5 or 6
practice sessions.
- Always break golf swing down into 2 parts, Set Up and The Swing,
so now you have set up, clear your mind and get ready to swing!
| SWING
Take the club back away from the ball as in lesson one but:
- Allow the head to move a couple of inches to the right.
- Relax the left knee and allow it to move a little towards
a stationary right knee.
|
|
 |
Swing the club back down towards the ball
allowing the arms to relax and extend to strike down and under
the ball through impact.
|
As the arms continue to extend through impact
the body weight will follow the club head, begin to fold the
right knee in towards the left and notice how the right foot
raises from the heel and rotates around the big toe!
|
|
 |
The
End Result – ‘The Pose’
Notice:
- The body is straight down the left side so that nearly all
the body weight is accepted on the left foot.
- The spinal angle is straight with no pressure on the back.
- The right shoe is vertical and acts as a balance point.
- The club is horizontal across the back of the head, a point
through the back of the ears.
- Grip pressure is maintained.

Knowing where to finish a golf swing is Vital. It turns what was
once a hit of a golf ball into the very thing we are all trying
to achieve, ‘A Swing’.
Next time you see the Pro’s on TV notice where they all finish!
