Lesson 1

Objectives – Learn how to

- Aim the club head
- Assume the correct grip
- Assume the correct posture

Understand how to initiate golf swing.

Step 1 - Read through the articles entitled, Aim, Grip and Posture in the Fundamentals section then,

Step 2 - Place a ball on to a tee peg.
- Select a 7 or 8 iron
- Find a target no further than 50 yards away
- Aim the club head at that target a couple of inches behind the ball
- Assume the correct grip and posture, only Position the feet a couple of inches apart (See photo)

Step 3 - Keeping your head still, initiate the swing by moving the left shoulder and left arm together so that the club head moves directly away from the target along the target line. (line through the ball towards the target) At the half back stage notice that the club shaft is both parallel to the ground and the target line. (See photo)
Step 4 - Relax under the armpits, let the club flow and swing with the arms
back and through the ball extending the arms at all time through impact to the position you see in this photo

The goal in lesson 1 is to get the ball airborne on a regular basis. Make no attempt at a longer swing, as this will only hinder the learning process.

Practice this until it feels consistent and remember not necessarily feeling comfortable, the grip particularly.

Walk before you can run!

As a beginner you are at an advantage as the grip feels awkward to 99% of people I meet, just remember that as this is the only connection you have to the club, without this you have no chance of a consistent swing. GRIP!

I would recommend that you have 3 or 4 sessions on a practice ground at lesson 1 before moving on to lesson 2
